On the set of Dau. Kharkov, Ukraine, June 2010.
All photos by Sergei Maximishin. I’ll leave them up here unless/until anyone involved objects to it. The story itself is here. And I’ve put some of the more interesting outtakes in this post, including a lot more details about Dau’s unique casting process.
In 2006 Ilya Khrzhanovsky, director of “4”, takes over a small town in the outskirts of Kharkov to supposedly begin the filming of his new film titled “Dau”. The entire town has been transformed in a Communist era set and the inhabitants been “employed” as cast. The film has taken over the entire life of the town and the nearby airport and the director, some say, has turned into a true communist era totalitarian dictator. After 6 years the shooting of the film still seems to be incomplete but the director promises it’s 80% done.
Read the incredible full story here, from November 2010.
